The southern part of the area was heavily involved in smuggling along the coast, and sheep
farming on the South Downs, the inland area has and still is mostly farming based. The
South Downs have remains of bronze age encampments. The villages to the north were heavily
involved in the Wealden iron industry . KingHenry III marched through the area from Battle
to Lewes to his defeat there in 1264 .
